BBC Four: Juliette Binoche’s Antigone at the Barbican
Sophocles‘ tragedy of Antigone has much to say to the modern audience. Even now in the uncertain globalised crises of life in the 2010s. The cold imperatives of justice and the maintenance of authority weigh uneasily against the particular values of love and solidarity.
Anne Carson, the award winning poet and classicist, has written this acclaimed new translation with Juliette Binoche wonderfully and movingly playing the title role. This is not an easy or pleasant watch, but it is compelling, exquisite, and important. This performance was recorded at the Barbican and broadcast on BBC Four, and will be available on the BBC iPlayer for the next few weeks.
