Laidlaw by William McIlvanney
Arguably the most influential novel in modern Scottish crime-writing from one of Scotland’s greatest living writers is on offer on the Kindle store. If you are a fan of the writers Ian Rankin or Val McDermid, then you are sure to enjoy this book by William McIlvanney which was the cornerstone of the tartan noir genre. The eponymous Jack Laidlaw is the archetypal flawed detective but he is imbued with much of the philosophical insight into the human condition of the writer himself. The novel follows the investigation of the brutal murder of a young girl, but it is not a whodunnit, rather a will they be caught, and it follows Laidlaw as he walks a narrow tightrope amidst the murky criminal underworld of Glasgow, and the at times dubious sphere of Glasgow policing. This is thrilling and insightful writing from the first page to the last, don’t miss it.
